"Pine Bluff- The Townsend Park Commission of Pine Bluff is inviting firms and organizations to enter contestants in the big contest staged at the Townsend park pool each independence day.For the past three years this event has drawn spectators from all over the nation as it is acknowledged to be the most novel affair of this kind staged anywhere. Contestants do not sell votes, solicit money or sponsors. The commission representatives handles all details and the contestant keeps what she wins. Each contestant receives some type of useful prize and the first prize is fifty dollars cash.
A Little Rock girl, Miss Rose McSpadden, won in 1949; Miss Sara Nell Rhinehart of Stephens won in 1950 and Miss Sally Hooper of Marianna won in 1951. Registrations of prospective sponsors and contestants are being received at 329-1-2 Main street, Pine Bluff and no further invitation is required. Contestants must be young women of good reputation between the ages of 16 and 25 inclusive and unmarried.
The Townsend Park Commission has been commended highly by press and pulpit for this major effort to bring the attention of the public the need for better recreational facilities for our people. It is held each Fourth of July at 4:00 p.m."
