"Four members of a Winston-Salem, N.C. family, among them a two-year-old child, were killed near here Wednesday in a jarring head-on auto collision as the returned from a Fourth of July visit with relatives.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol identified the dead as Rebecca Hines, 42, Lucille Williams, 48, Gosley Brown, 65, and Reynolds Chandler, 2. The driver of the death car, and the only person in the car to survive the rack[sic] was identified as Willie Hines. He was in critical condition late Wednesday.
HIGHWAY PATROLMAN T.E. Hudson said the driver of the other car in the wreck, Greensboro, N.C., suburban postmistress Mrs. Mary Louise Thompson, 51, escaped the roaring crash that reduced both cars to jumbos of twisted metal with only a black eye.
Hudson said Miss Thompson’s seatbelt prevented her from receiving major injury in the wreck that occurred on U.S. Highway 52 shortly afternoon about 12 miles north of here.
He said that the Hynes’s auto, a 1958 Chevrolet station wagon, was so heavily loaded with luggage and a five passengers that a left rear axle snapped in half, causing the car to swerve into the opposing Lane of traffic in into the path of Miss Thompson 1964 Pontiac sedan. Both cars were described as total wrecks Hudson.
The officer said Hines was transferred from a Darlington clinic shortly after the rack and was taken to a hospital in nearby Florence for surgery. The four passengers in the Hines‘s car or killed instantly and the wreck, he said.
Hudson said the Heinz is party was returning from a visit with relatives in Kingstree, S.C. over the Fourth of July weekend when the wreck occurred. Mrs. Thompson was driving to Florence"
