Description

“Wham! Bang! Boon. Firecrackers, torpedoes, flares and what have you? … Radeo thrills, chills and just plenty spills. Picnics, a la country style, open pavilion danves, and so another July 4th passes. Independence Day, and what have we but several wars going on in the four corners of the earth. Firecrackers booming over here and cannons spending lead at human targets “over there” and ye scribe wonders if the oft-used Christmas phrase, “Peace on earth and good will to men’ will ever become an actuality. P. S. Here's hoping readers of “Sport Pot’ had as much fun on “Hellzapoppin” day as ye scribe.
Out on the west coast, our fistically inclinclid friend, “Hammering Henry Armstrong, once three title holder, has again stepped inside the squared circle as a leather slinger, and not in the role of a second manager or referee. Any one of the latter three mentioned would be more along “Hammerin Hank’s’ line than the former. But try and tell Henry so … He disagrees … No need to say that in spite of Hank;s two successive victories the most recent over Shock Rangel last week, his gallant comeback attempt may prove disastrous unless someone persuades little “Perpetual Motion” to hang up his glory gloves while the hanging is good and rest upon his hard-earned ring laurels of a few years back.
Of course, one shouldn’t assume that it “can’t be done”, (though ring champs seldom make successful comebacks) but a fighter of Armstrong's style who absorbs more punishment than he metes cut, can’t “take it” without event really ending up “slap happy avenue.”
It was ye scribe’s opinion, and not his alone, that Eddie Meade, Armstrong’s supporter allowed him to fight entirely too much than was good for Armstrong: and in fights that were not around drawers. With more cautious managership, Armstrong would probably be holding one of his three titles today. Bet that is a matter of speculation. However, unless he Armstrong does the “near impossible” and succeeds in his comeback try, ‘30 should be written to the career of the greatest little fighter and showman the prize fight game has ever witnessed before those scar tissues make a bad matter worse.
Shot Shots … Remember, folks, those Memphis Red Sox - Little Rock Sox would appreciate some votes for the annual East-West baseball classic on August 16.”
