"Hon. Frederick Douglass, according to his usual custom celebrated the Fourth of July by inviting a large circle of friends including all his relations to join in a union picnic. The day was warm one, and it was a real treat to spend a day at so pleasant a place as “Cedar Hill.” All kinds of sport was indulged in, croquet seemed to be the favorite amusement. Among those present were Mr. Anderson of Ohio, Prof. Terrell, Parker Balley, E. M. Hewlett Esq, A. F. Hilyer, A. E. T. Draper, Dr. J. P. Turner and the sons of the venerable host Lewis, Charles, and Frederick Jr. The ladies were: Mrs. Anderson, Otey, Sprague, Parker, Turner, Misses Nichols, Poindexter and Dyson."
