Description

“NEW YORK - Forty silver medallions that were to be presented to the nation’s top athletes as the special Fourth of July weekend salute were stolen Thursday from a delivery van outside the Jacob Javits Conventions Center, police said.
The producers of the medallions, the National Standard Group, appealed to the thieves who broke into the van to return “these gifts from America.”
Bill Potter, the promotional group’s vice-president, said the 40 silver medallions were minted exclusively for the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation and were to be given to the nation’s top athletes at a Sports Salute to the Statue at Brendan Byrne Arena July 6.
He said there was no time to remind them before the event, part of the Fourth of July weekend’s final celebration.
The company’s delivery van parked for 10 minutes outside the Jacob Javits Convention Center at about 3:30 p.m. to deliver a letter, police said. It then was to go to the foundation’s offices to deliver the medallions.
Bur when driver Grantley Saniford of Brooklyn returned to the 1981 Ford Van he found someone had smashed the right vent window and stolen the box of medallions, police said.
Potter declined to estimate how much they are worth but said they had already been paid for by Don Ohlemeyer, the producer of the sports salute.”
