"RICHMOND
There are more than 100 major holidays, events and anniversaries in America that are recognized, celebrated, or observed.
Beside celebrating major holidays like New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas, among others, some people celebrate or observe Leap Year Day, Ash Wednesday and Arbor Day. Some people also observe the anniversary of Bacon's Rebellion in Virginia. Sigmund Freud's Birthday. Indianapolis 500 Day and the Fall of the Alamo.
The AFRO asked eight people in Richmond what was their favorite holiday or occasion. Here are the respondents’ answers:
Reginald Kimble, factory employee: “Fourth of July. It seems like people have a lot of fun during that time of year. But I would like to see Dr. Martin Luther King have a holiday because he deserves it for what he did, the buses, and different little odds and ends to make black life a little better.”
Linda Dixon, college student: “Christmas. It’s just nice time of the year to give. I like to give gifts and it’s nice to receive them."
Levine C. Sullivan, research analyst: “ Christmas. It’s the month of Christ, and it's my birthday. It's just a time I get to be with my family in South Carolina.” Patricia Carroll, nurse’s assistant: “Christmas, because Christ was born on Christmas. And Easter, and Mother’s Day. I’m into Christianity because he saved me one day last year. He filled me with the gift of the Holy Ghost’s. My sins have been washed away. I’ve repented all of my sins. I’m 29.”
Dorothy Taylor, customer service representative: “My favorite holiday or occasion is the Fourth Of July. It sorts of reminds you of Independence Day…freedom for everyone.”
Zenobia Lewis, customer services representative: “My birthday is my favorite because on my birthday I do everything that I am old enough to do… and I am old. And I have a special feeling towards my parents on my birthday because they are responsible for me being here. I celebrate Mother's and Father’s Day.” Brenda Baylor, customer service representative: “Fourth of July because I usually take a vacation then. The last time I went to L.A. (Los Angeles). I’m going there again because I like the climate, the plane trip… I just like everything about it.
Ricky Shaw, warehouseman: “Fourth of July, because it's summertime, the beach, parks. Summer and spring are my favorite seasons because I like the warm weather… I like to be out, and I can watch the girls’"
