Description

"In accordance with a call issued by the Executive Committee, a public meeting was held on Monday evening, 14th instant, in the vestry of the Bethel Church, to make arrangements for joinging the procession to celebrate the ensuing Anniversary of American Independence. Michael Howards was appointed chairman, and Joseph S. Henriques, secretary.
A resolution was adopted that we unite with our fellow-citizens in celebrating the Fourth of July.
Notice was given that the Brannan Guards, Lincoln Zouaves and Young Men’s Beneficial Society intended to inform the Grand Marshal that they were prepared to join the procession. No further action was taken, and the meeting adjourned.
Committees from the above organizations waited on the Grand Marshal, on Tuesday, and requested to be assigned a position in the procession. They were informed that their communications were referred to the committee on procession, and they would receive an answer the next day. We hope they will not dance attendance on the august committee but make preparations to have an independent procession.
This committee on Procession is a new feature in celebrations. We believe, heretofore, the duty of arranging processions has devolved on the Grand Marshal of the day. Was this committee invented to check the liberal spirit of the gentleman who now occupies that high position, or is it the relieve Gen. Winn of the odium of refusing the colored citizens a place in the procesion?
The whole arrangements, from the preliminary meeting to the present time, including the election of officers, the appointment of the nominating committee, the selection of the general committee, the appointment of the different sub-committes, look very much as if the Democrats intended to make this celebration a party affair. The men who a few years ago redudiated the Fourth of July, pronounced the sublime truths of the Declaration of Independence a “mass of glittering generalities,” and denounced its results, have now, as the Chronicle said from the beginning, captured the Fourth of July, and intend running it as a Copperhead institution.
The Times, Alta and Bulletin, all denounce the organization of the Committees, and the oflicious meddling of Copperheads and Secessionists."
