Title

The Colored People and the Fourth of July Celebration

Description

The Democratic Committee of Arrangements for the celebration of the 93rd anniversary of American Independence, under the lead of the distinguished gentleman from Alcatraz, have gotten themselves in a confounded snarl, the Republicans are laughing heartily at the dilemma, and we are joining in the machinations. The whole happy family of Copperheads are alarmed lest the negroes should join in the procession. Justice Ladd (Oh my laddie) has issued his manifesto defining his position- the Hickory Club attempted to pass resolutions denouncing our presumption for daring to demand our right to a place in the procession, but couldn’t; the Examiner is virulent and spiteful; the Herald is dignified and indignant; while the little Call is fussing and fuming as if it had lost daily rations of peanuts.
We held a Public Meeting on Monday evening last (see proceedings). The Young Men’s Union Beneficial Society held a meeting on Tuesday evening and decided to join the procession, provided they were not placed behind beer wagons, dirt carts, and all manner of vehicles. The Brannan Guards and Lincoln Zouaves have come to the same conclusion.
But things have taken a new turn. Grand Marshal Wynn has found out that the invitations he issued wasn’t any invitations at all, so the whole work will have to be done over again, and it is doubtful whether we will receive an “invite” after all.
On the whole, notwithstanding the herculean efforts of the Chronicle, we think we had better not “procesh::. Our friends, the Republicans, having taken up our cause, feels insulted at the insults which have been cast upon us, and have determined not to turn out, but to leave Marshal Wynn and his procession with his eight hour men, iron moulders, (who tried to stop Booth’s Foundry) little boys, dirt carts, Hickory Clubs and all the other Copperheads.
