Description

"COLUMBIA, Miss. – All five candidates for governor in the Mississippi Democratic primary told an audience at a Fourth of July rally here last week they would see to it that integration never comes to the public schools of Mississippi.

Atty. Ross Barnett, 51, told the audience of 1,500, “If you elect me I’ll see to it we will have segregation in every public school in Mississippi.”

His opponents, Former Gov. Fielding Wright, Mrs. Mary Cain, Paul B. Johnson and James P. Coleman were equally adamant.

In addition, Mrs. Cain said she would clean out the welfare rolls. She claimed the roles [sic] now aid “7,070 illegitimate Negro children and 216 illegitimate white children.” She did not name the source of her figures.

The candidates also devoted some attention to problem of bringing more revenue and industry into the state.

Barnett said in addition, he believes Communist lawyers are involved with the NAACP in attempts to integrate public schools.

He said he would not permit “any meddlers to come down here and run the schools of Mississippi.”"
