“To a certain Chinaman is attributed the statement: “Melican people elect gleat [sic] monument over the grave of George Washington, who never tell a lie, but Melican people go light ‘long an’ lie like hellee [sic], ev’ly [sic] time.” And this is just one of the many inconsistencies of this proud, boasting nation.

Approaches Independence Day. We will commemorate the founding the of the nation and the issuing of the Declaration of Independence. Eulogies will be delivered in honor of the intrepid spirit of the founders of the Republic. This instrument begins with the declaration that “all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Note the “all men;” and the term “unalienable Rights,” and these are conceded to be Divine endowments.

In the Independence Day speeches much will be said of the Constitution. Appeals will be made to stand by the Constitution. The controversy between the New Deal and the Supreme Court concerning property rights’ which the New Deal and the Supreme Court concerning property rights’ which the New Deal would violate, but what about human rights? The Constitution provides that a citizen shall not be “deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law.” Another provision of the Constitution is that “the right of citizens to vote shall not be abridged nor denied by the United States’ nor by any State on account of race, color or any previous condition of servitude.” But, while the principles of justice and equity are recognized, in theory, in practice in this country, they have become “a scrap of paper.”

Until these human rights are recognized and sustained in reference to all classes of citizens, the speeches e[ill.]olling the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States will be but mockeries.”
