Description

"We are indebted to Mr. Daniel Seales for a copy of the Daily Republican of 7th July, published at Little Rock, Arkansas, contain an account of the celebration of Independence Day of that place. The celebration was under the auspices of the “Sons of Ham,” and the “Sons of Honor,” two societies composed of colored men. The literary exercises were held at the fair grounds, where a Picnic was also given. Nearly two thousand persons were on the ground during the day. The oration was delivered by Hon. W. h. Gray, Commissioner of Immigration; and the Declaration of Independence was read by Mifflin W. Gibbs, Esq, County Attorney. Mr. Gibbs is well known in this section; he resided in this city from 1850 until 1858, when he went to Victoria. A few years ago he left British Columbia and settled in Arkansas, where he has risen to eminence. We congratulate our old friend on his preferment."
