Description

"WASHINGTON, (ANP)-The mobilization of “manpower” by the new board, headed by Paul V. McNutt, brings to the fore the part women are to play in the present world conflict in relieving men for active way duty and military assignments.
According to the tentative plans, the date set for the registration of women throughout the United States is July 4. On this day, all women are to be registered. By the end of this year, Frances Perkins of the department of labor predicts two to three millions of the 15 million workers in war industries will be women. The official estimate is that four million women will be on the pay rolls of war industrial plants by 1943.
Housewives with small children will not be expected to seek work unless they can employ older women to care for their children. Trained women, who quit their jobs when they are married, will be called upon to rejoin the nation’s labor forces for the duration. Housewives who have grown children or those who have none and who live in surburbs [sic] or in town where jobs are open are to be encouraged to work. The introduction of these jobs will free a large number of men for actual military work with the armed forces."
