Description

La Rochelle, France, July 30.— "The Fourth of July was celebrated in commemoration of American independence by Consul and Mrs. W.J. Yerby at La Rochelle in their lovely villa, 23 Avenue du Mail. The reception was announced to begin at 5 and close at 7 p.m., but a number of guests anxious to pay homage to the sister republic, began to arrive as early as 4:30, and by 5:30 the reception rooms and garden were full of distinguished officials and citizens of La Rochelle.
The reception rooms were beautifully decorated with cut flowers, and the American and French flags waved from the from of the villa.
Among the guests were the Prefect and Madame Bouffard with their daughter, Senator-Mayor Perreau, Deputy Hesse, former minister for the colonies: the colonel commanding the troops of La Rochelle, Monsieur Christian Morch, president of the chamber of commerce: the president, Monsieur Robin, and the members of the consular corps, Monsieur Bernard, [ill.] of the republic: the treasurer general and Madame de Gantles, the commandant and Madame Dumont with their daughter and several representatives from the old families of the town.
Consul and Mrs. Yerby were assisted in receiving by Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Eblon, leading American citizens at Rochelle; their house guests, Dr. and Mrs. R.A. Williams and their daughter of Chicago, Ill., and some of their intimate French friends. Moving pictures were taken during the reception."
