"NEWARK. N.J- Shady Rest Country Club celebrated with fourth of July attractions, last Friday: Golf, tennis, and cardplaying, with numbers of basket lunches.

A representative group of the New York and New Jersey Wilberforce University Alumni Club included Mrs. Elsie St. John, Errol Challender, an investment broker; Mr. Travis Grayer, business man; Miss Beatrice Madison, secretary. Lincoln Industrial Exchange, all from New York City; Mr. and Mrs. John Pitner, directors. Green Cross Nurse Social Center. Newark , N.J; also Miss Thelma Scales, formerly a high school teacher of North Carolina, and Rev. Harvey A. Onque.

Others among those seen enjoying the fourth of July at Shady Rest Country Club were: George Hill and his wife; Bessie Nelms Hill, one of the teachers in Trenton’s New Lincoln School; Mrs. Lottle M. Cooper, of Orange, N.J., who made herself famous at Granny McLean in “White Dresses,” presented by New Jersey’s Beaux Arts Club, and Mrs. Bertha B. Randolph, wife of Assistant District Attorney Oliver Randolph, East Orange, N.J.; Rev. J.E. Harper, with his wife and daughter; Miss Valleta, of Brooklyn, N.Y.

At the Sojourner Truth Branch Y.W.C.A 25 Orleans Street, the Grade School Club went on a sight-seeing trip to New York, Sunday.

The High School group is planning tennis and a hike as summer program features, and also rehearsals for an early fall play.

The Invincibles went with the Central Industrial Girls for a weekend at camp. Another feature planned for the summer is a sail up the Hudson.

The Akanta Club and other groups of girls- Girl Reserves Department- will go for a hike, July 22nd. This club has also planned a moonlight sail up the Hudson. Tennis at Branch Brook Park, and also a weekend visit to Fern Rock, Camp, New York.

The membership committee, Mrs. U. M. Jennifer, chairman, held a membership tea at the residence of Mrs. Sadie Willis, in Belleville, Thursday evening, July 3rd. Short addresses were made by Mesdames Morris and Jennifer. Several persons joined the ”Y.”

The Membership Council held an interesting and important meeting last week. Many plans were made for fall, among them being a membership rally in September."
