"Washington D.C.- Far ranging support from black Americans for “Honor America Day,” the massive fourth of July celebration planned for Washington and throughout the nation, was announced recently by the sponsoring committee.

J. Willard Marriott, chairman of the executive committee for Honor America Day, said: “The broad support we are receiving from distinguished representatives of various ethnic groups underscores the nonpartisan, nonpolitical nature of our program

It has been our intention from the outset to stage a huge old-fashioned Fourth of July celebration here in Washington and to encourage others to follow suit in large and small communities throughout America. We want this to be a celebration for all Americans, regardless of race or political philosophy.”

Roy Wilkins, executive director of the NAACP, is a member of the executive committee for Honor America Day. Other black Americans on the sponsoring committee as of June 17, 1970 include:

Dr. James Cheek, president of Howard University; Bishop Smallwood Williams of the Bibleway Church, Washington; the Rev. Leon Sullivan, founder-president of the Opportunities Industrialization Center, Philadelphia.

Public relations consultants, Ofield Dukes and James (Bud) Ward, both of Washington baseball players Henry Aaron of Atlanta, Willie Mays of San Francisco, and Ed Stroud of Washington Senators;

Becky Burrell, National Business League; Jackie Robinson of Brooklyn Dodgers fame and Freedom National Bank, New York.

Also, B. Doyle Mitchell, president of the Industrial Bank of Washington; Henry Parks of Parks Sausage Company, Baltimore; and John Wheeler of Mechanics and farmers Back of Durham, N.C.

Others include Washington Mayor Walter Washington, Arch Booth, and E. Dan Dobson.

Among the events planned are a marathon, with runners beginning simultaneously in Philadelphia, Valley Forge and Williamsburg. A memorial service will be held on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

One highlight of the ceremonies will be a “stars and stripes” studded stage show emceed by Bob Hope on the Washington Monument grounds."
