Description

“FIDDLING WHILE ROME BURNS… Have you made hasn’t found any scheduled amusement for the day. Food your plans for the FOURTH OF JULY? … This columnist is rationed cutting out the old-time picnic, transportation is discouraged by R. R. officials, mosquitoes are present from the recent flood and above all the Boss says his wallet looks like an elephant stepped on it so it looks like a helluva day for me! … and you? … you’ll be “fiddling while Rome burns” if you take the day for whoopee while our sons are dying on foreign battlefields! Let’s get war-conscious! Spend that money buying WAR BONDS!
PULL UP A CHAIR … Story of the week: News reaches me that EDWARD J. ROBERTS wooed some recent Dunbar graduate, sporting himself as a member of a prominent Pittsburg family, a student at Meharry Medical College and owner of an expensive automobile and all of that, [sic] the young deaf fell and fell hard. In a fashionable [sic] was performed on Sunday … FLASH … [sic] comes Monday, his former landlady visited the bridal chamber and brand him lonttaged in a pair of STOLEN pajamas! … One thing certain, he will prove to be a good loughing in the Old Rock, among them are Pvt. Charles Waugh, who will aspire for OCS: from the Navy, Clarence Hill, who has 9 nine years service with the sailing crew, landing in this country only recently from the Pacific, and is guest of his mother, Mrs. Eva Hill at 712 West 12th Street … Looking fine is Pvt. Bunn, nephew of our friend C. D. Bunn … 1st Lt. Ben Woods who gained many friends here when he served as physician in the the Alice Eve Memorial Hospital at Hot Springs. Mrs. Woods is the former Adelle Terry and was here at the bedside of her mother, Mrs. H.T. Terry, 1510 W. 16th Street … Lt. and Mrs. Wood reside near Ft. Livingston, La. … INFANTIDING … Rev. and Mrs. J. F. Henderson (Allison Temple Presbyterian) are being congratulated for a bouncing baby boy … Our friend Gladys Hancock (Mrs. Ed) left to join him in Washington, D. C. where he and twin brothers (L. V. and Arve) work with government agencies … THIS is NEWS … Someone should tell VIVIAN RAWLES she is playing with fire and is going to get burned. We would go into details, but news is just reaching us of the sudden death of D. W. LEE, movable school farm agent, who we always noted as a model husband and father. Our sympathy to Mrs. Lee and the children … May the Supreme Power comfort Mrs. L. B. Paston in the loss of her husband and also the grief stricken sons and daughter … George was here from St. Louis, Kames came from his army camp in California and the daughter, Mrs. CHarles Patillio was here from Pennsylvania, … Mrs. L. C. Shanks of Atlanta, Georgia is guest in the beautiful home of her daughter, Mrs. Haxel S. Hynson, 1221 Craig. Mrs. Shanks is the sister of Mrs. D. P. Cook … the day with her mother … Speaking about some place to go there will be some prominent weddings soon, but we regret they begged us to keep silent on the matter … With hottest weather ahead for us where is the cool spot our friend, T. G. Perry promised? I understand it was located near Lake Forest. Were you teasing Perry? … I read this clipping in a magazine, so I pass it on to you … “Soap and water is not rationed yet, so use plenty of it and then use some body deodorant will make you keep your friends longer” … I’ll certainly be happy if the City Council decides on POLICE WOMEN! Maybe they can induce these young girls to stop smoking on street corners and frequently indecent places … but what example is laid for them when grown women are see doing the same thing! … Wonder who the old man was who was so drunk on the bus Saturday he absolutely fell to the pavement when he alighted at 16th and High Streets?
Should you see an unusual bright spot on the North side, when all elsewhere is in gloom, there is no need for excitement, for it is not a phenomenon of the sun in the wrong direction … it is only the charming Mrs. Flora Johnson, for who wouldn’t be in smiles when her mate has just returned for an indefinite stay from the Army after a period of many months … Chas, we are always glad to have you back!
I have visited the office this week and the Boss has added Miss Pauline Fielding to the staff as secretary. Miss Fielding is a Junior at Tennessee State College, and I am telling you, the office is beautifully decorated! … We’ll be seeing you after your headache is over from your FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION!”
