Description

"[Picture] Mrs.Myrlie Evers, widow of slain NAACP official Medgar Evers, was slated to lead the July Fourth mass march in Chicago, according to Chicago to NAACP leaders [Caption].
A fourth of July “March to Freedom” was to highlight the 54th six-day annual convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
The parade was scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and involve some 50,000 persons.
Leading the parade were outstanding leaders in the field of civil rights such as Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, president of the Christian Movement for Human Rights; Roy Wilkins, NAACP national secretary; Singer Lena Horne, Harvey Gantt, Clemson College student, and others.
Collin Cromwell said, “We are devoting the day to the plight of the Negro worker. We want to awaken Negroes and whites alike to the need for Negro employment.”
Rev. W. N. Daniel, president of the Chicago NAACP, said, “We will be keenly disappointed if we have less than 50,000 marchers.”
This feature of the convention, which will be one of the most important in the 34-year history of the organization, “Is to demonstrate to the world the unfinished job for equal rights, particularly in the fields of education and employment,” Cromwell Stated.
Clarence Laws, of Dallas, Texas, Southwest regional secretary of the NAACP, noted that “NAACP leaders feel that what happens during the convention will have a tremendous influence in Congress in relation to enactment on civil rights issues.”
Approximately 2,000 delegates are expected to attend the convention which is headquartered in the Morrison Hotel.
Lena Horne was to present the 48th Spingarn Medal to Mrs. Medgar Evers, wife of the slain NAACP field secretary for his distinguished achievement in his crusade to secure for Negroes of his native state, Mississippi, justice under the law and full citizenship rights.
NAACP leaders from all over the country began arriving in Chicago to make advance arrangements for the most important of all conventions since the upsurge of Negro demonstrations in Birmingham, Jackson, Philadelphia, Charleston, New York, St. Louis, Nashville and elsewhere.
On Monday, July 1, guests and delegates attended a reception in their honor at Progressive Baptist Church, 3658 S. Wentworth Ave.
Climaxing the six-day convention will be the “Freedom Fund Dinner,” Friday at 7 p.m. in the Terrace Casino of the Morrison Hotel."
