Description

"The Democratic Convention has nominated a Presidential candidate, and the most exciting question now is, Were the colored citizens refused a position in the procession? The affair is all in a muddle. The Examiner says they were, and boasts of it as a Democratic triumph. The Executive Committee have published a card, certifying “that there was no refusal or objection to the colored people turning out in the procession of the Fourth of July, and a resolution was passed assigning them a position in the ninth division,” which statement Col. J. D. Stevenson, certifies as correct. Mr. Henriques says the Grand Marshal told him the Brannan Guards would be assigned a position, but when the programme was published there was no mention made of the company. Why this omission? After enumerating Breweries, Stomach Bitters, Squarza’s Punch, Bill Posters, etc., it says “And other business and trade representations, citizens on foot, mounted, in carriages, etc.” The Brannan Guards is not a “business or trade representation,” but a military company, and should have been mentioned as such. They were prepared to turn out, but in consequence of the omission declined making their appearance."
