LOS ANGELES, Calif., June 30- A grudge battle of bands is the big news of the week and the proposed contest planned for the Fourth of July at Elks auditorium grew out of the most unusual chain of circumstances in western musical and theatrical history. Charles Echols has for several years headed a classy aggregation of young musicians called Echols’ Dixie Rhythm Kings, playing at the Savoy and outside engagements. They were the most popular of all among the dancing crowd and besides worked in moving pictures and at white theaters. Now Charles claims that Earl Dancers’ Fourteen Gentlemen from Harlem is his original band. He declares that Earl, given a rush opportunity to replace a white band that was walking out on Warner’s Downtown theater, induced his band to come over under his banner and change their name to Fourteen Gentlemen from Harlem. Echols has organized and built up another Dixie Rhythm Kings, and to prove his belief in his superiority as an orchestra leader, declares he can take them and beat his old outfit playing. Hence, Westerly Dudley, popular young promoter of things different, has seized upon the idea for his second annual battle of bands and has had Echols issue a challenge to Earl Dancer and his Harlem Gentlemen. If they accept the duel of sharps and flats is to take place in a matinee dance and beauty contest at the Elks. Last year Dudley and Jay Moss packed them in with a contest between Jim Wynn’s band and Harley Luce’s famous organization of white musicians. Wynn got the prize. Over $200 will be given away this year in the beauty contest.
BILLYE BROWN, pretty, lustrous eye entertainer, is confined to her room recovering from a severe accident that occurred when a street car she was boarding, jerked and threw her down. Her leg was painfully sprained and bruised.
THE TIVOLI THEATER had a big run last Sunday on Louie Armstrong’s “Rhapsody in Black and Blue,” a Vitaphone picture.
THE FLORENCE MILLS theater held a big anniversary all week.
EDDIE DRIVER’S Dark Clouds of Joy band packed them in at the Lincoln theater last Sunday and Monday, a week ago. George Smith’s unique washboard band held the stage last Sunday.
GEORGE RAMSEY, proprietor of the Douglas hotel and cabaret at San Diego, is in town, allegedly looking for new talent.
LOTTIE GEE is rapidly recovering from a nervous breakdown suffered during her engagement at the Cathay hotel in Shanghai, China."
