Race Turns Out to Celebrate Nation’s Birth, p. 5

Description

"A capacity crowd jammed the auditorium of the New Wendell Phillips high school last Sunday for the observance of a pre-Independence Day celebration sponsored by a group of business and professional people, headed by Attorney Richard E. Westbrooks.
Principal speakers were Fred J. Smith, deputy Municipal court clerk and Attorney James B. Cashin. Both devoted their talks to the history of the Race and urged the audience to work toward a closer unity among their own people, and learn to appreciate the deeds of valor wrought by their forebears.
Explains Purpose
Others on the program were Dr. Harry Garnes, Prof. James A. Mundy, and the senior Pilgrim choir: Prof. W.E. Myrick, and the Federal Glee club, Attorney Patrick B. Prescott, Miss Margaret Bonds, South Side Concert orchestra, and Mrs. Cleo Dickerson Ball, Prof. George A. Gullatt, Prof. E.C. Bartlett and Antoinette Garnes.
The purpose of the meeting as outlined by Attorney Westbrooks, whose brilliant keynote speech was soundly applauded, was to direct attention of the Race to the part it has played in the building up of the nation and to explain why it should rally to proclaim its joy on Independence Day.
During his discourse, Attorney Cashin pointed out that “White I favor the anti-lynching bill or any other legislation designed to destroy the vicious practices of mass murder, yet it is my opinion that the ballot in the hand of the Negro will prove far more effective than a dozen anti-lynching laws.”"
