SAN DIEGO, Calif., July 15.- Independence day was generally observed [ill.] the state of California and on the Pacific coast. Race lodges participated in the parade down Broadway at 10 a.m.
The Clementine McDuff lodge No. [ill.]. L.B.P.O.E. of W., gave a dance July 2 at San Diego pier auditorium.
An interesting meeting of the Bud Billikens of Santa Barbara was held July 1 at the home of Miss Altheda Smith, 127 E. Monticello St.
A better health program was held at Independent church in Los Angeles Sunday afternoon. Among the notable speakers were Dr. S.S. Turner, Mrs. Mable Gray, Dr. Ruth Temple, Judge Gergois Bullock, Juanita Edwards, Mrs. Elizabeth St. Charles Edwards, Mrs. Z. Otey Smith and Mrs. Moxley
Ulysses G. Chambers, well known organist, appeared at Second Baptist church in a special concert July 10. He is a native of Baltimore, Md., and a graduate from Demosch institute, New York city.
Lorenzo Holloway of Los Angeles and Miss Ruth Rebecca Inghram, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.D. Inghram, were married at the home of her parents in San Bernardino, Calif. Rev. J. W. Price of Monrovia, Calif., officiated. A reception was tendered the couple after the ceremony and delicious refreshments were served. Mrs. Holloway is a graduate of San Bernardino high school and of Los Angeles general hospital as a registered nurse. Mr. Holloway has been in business in Los Angeles for 10 years.
At Auburn, Calif., July 2 Normal Blackwell was under court sentence to marry his sweetheart, Ruth Taylor. Blackwell, convicted of beating his fiancee, was given a suspended sentence by Justice of the Peace P.W. Smith who ordered that Blackwell marry her within 10 days.
The Central Ave. District Property Owners’ and Business Men’s Protective association has been organized in Southern California. The board of directors is composed of P.O. Holt, William H. Gamble, Elijan Cooper, C.S. Blodgett Jr., Dr. G. D. Gordon, G.W. City, Dr. A.C. Garrett, Dr. M.J. Marmillion, W. A Clark, W.D. Terry and Attorney E. J. Jennings.
Spirituals and other melodies were sung by the Cotton Blossom Singers from Piney Woods, Miss., at Mission Hills Congregational church Wednesday. Rev. W. L. Goldsmith is pastor.
Mother Harriet Marshall, 96 years old. [ill]951 Commercial St., San Diego, died recently. She was the widow of the late Edward Marshall, a member of Heintzelman post, G.A.R. The funeral was held at Bethel A.M.E. church Thursday. Rev. X.C. Runyon officiating.
The cast of “The Green Pastures” gave a midnight benefit show July 7 at Fox Palace theater in Los Angeles. Mr. Rosenberg, manager of the theater, donated the theater to assist in the work of the Southern California Institute of Social Work which is helping to feed hundreds of destitute families. Among the volunteer artists were Alma Travers, Alma Hightower’s kiddies and Charles Olden of the Lafayette Players.
The Women’s Self Improvement club of Santa Barbara honored the recent graduates, Miss Azalia Carr and Miss Edna Mae Jones, at the home of Mrs. Janie Jones. Among those present were Rev. and Mrs. F.A. Harris, Mr. and Mrs. B.G. Goodwin, Mr. and Mrs. Eli Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Lang, Mrs. Dessa Conway, Mrs. Margaret Pullins, Mrs. Eugenia Chapman and daughter, Miss Dorothy; Mrs. Blanche Thomas and Miss Bernice Thomas.
The United Spanish War Veterans, Capt. E.L. Baker, camp No.71 of Los Angeles was tendered a midnight show Saturday at the Florence Mills theater. Among the visiting artists who took part were Salem and Homer “Tutt” Whitney, Miss Bertha Wright of the Whispering Trio: Oliver Foster, Mrs. Blythwoods Reginald, Jazz Boy and Dip Song Birds, Miss Edith Spencer and Bill Robinson.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Frank Ernest post No. 2132 held a dance and outing July 4 at the Appomattox club in Los Angeles.
Attorney Hugh E. Macbeth of Los Angeles, well-known barrister, won a favorable decision in the residence restrictions case before division No.1, first district court of appeals in San Francisco. The case was entitled “Oberwise vs. Poulous, Cary Smith and Lillie B. Smith,” and involved residence property at the corner of W. Adams St. and Western Ave. in Los Angeles.
Dr. James P. Brawley, dean of Clark university, Atlanta, Ga., will be guest speaker at the Los Angeles Civic league Sunday, July 17. July 3 the main speaker was Attorney William C. Ring. James McGregor is president of the league.
Rehearsals of the Affiliated Choral society, S.M. Beane, president, and E.E. Lightney, secretary, are being held under the direction of Mrs. Minnie Albritton-Jackson at the M.E. church in Los Angeles, corner 42d and Wadsworth Sts. This chorus of 1,000 voices will make its appearance in August at Hollywood bowl.
The Golden State Mutual Life Insurance company celebrated its seventh anniversary. Dr. H. Claude Hudson, Los Angeles, president of the N.A.A.C.P., was guest speaker on the program held at First A.M.E. Zion church corner of Pico and Paloma Sts., on July 10. The board of directors includes William Nickerson Jr., George A. Beavers Jr., S.P. Johnson, Norman O. Houston, H. H. Towles, J.A. Evans, L.M. Hudson and George S. Price.
The Southern California Alumni association, of which Miss Consuelo V. Bright is president, and Mrs. Lillian Smith-Stevenson, secretary, gave a reception to the graduates at Wesley Chapel in Los Angeles last Friday night and at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Edwards of E. 115th St. on Saturday night. The Friday night program at Wesley Chapel included speeches by William Stevens, Marjorie Bright, Ishmael Flory and Emmett Smith. Miss Zula Stevens was at the organ. Scholarship award was given to Mr. Flory, and to Attorney Afue McDowell was given a key made in the form of a scroll.
Miss Etta Moton, a star of “Zombie,” will appear in recital at Eighth and Towne Ave. A.M>E> church in Los Angeles July 26.
About 600 persons attended the recent St. John’s day celebration of Masonic lodges of Los Angeles and vicinity. The Eastern Star sisters were also present. The master of ceremonies was Jerome L. Hubert. The choir of Eighth and Towne Ave. A.M.E. church sang and other artists on program were Prof. John A. Gray, Mrs. Sheffield and Mr. Boston. The speaker of the day was Past Grand Master J.H. Wilson. Wallace Clark also spoke.
The Elks of Los Angeles gave a bathing beauty and pajama parade on July 13 preliminary to a dancing party sponsored by supporters of Mrs. Ruth Butler in the popularity contest for “Miss Los Angeles,” queen of 1932.
Marle Dixon, Los Angeles girl aviatrix, and who is also a pianist, singer and dancer, was honored by friends in the cast of “The Green Pastures” at her home, 1245 E. Adams St., upon her return from Seattle, Wash.
J.W. Pigee of the naval hospital in San Diego has been visiting friends and relatives in Denver, Colo.
Rev. and Mrs. E.W. Perry of Oklahoma City, Okla., who are newlyweds now visiting Southern California on their honeymoon, were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. S. Goodwin and Mr. and Mrs. E Barmore at 526 Date St. in Monrovia, Calif.
Judge Walter S. Gates of Los Angeles county superior court was the principal speaker Tuesday at Wadsworth St. school auditorium in Los Angeles before the Negro Voters’ club. Other speakers were Attorney Willis O. Tyler, Thatcher J. Kemp and George W. Rochester. Wood Wilson is president, and A.J. Fitzpatrick is secretary of the club.
The Girl Reserves conference at Asilomar, Calif., ended July 5 with interesting programs.Among the delegates were Hazel Green and Mattie Moorhead of Los Angeles high school, and Miss Ruby Cosette, Girl Reserves secretary. This summer camp is near Oakland, Calif., and is a great retreat for business girls and professional women.
The Oklahoma Colored club of Phoenix, Ariz., celebrated the Fourth of July with its annual all-day picnic at East Lake Park. W.M. Sulcer is president of the club. A program of sports, music and speaking was presented throughout the day and L.C. McNabb, city attorney, made the address. Mayor Fred Paddock and other city officials spoke Monday night. Free barbeque sandwiches were served to the unemployed. Music was furnished by a quartet.
Never in the history of Oakland, Calif., have the Race citizens been so interested in politics. The East Bay Political league has been organized and the officers are: E.C. Washington, president: Hayden Sessions, vice president: S.D. Alexander, secretary. The object of the league is to teach members of the Race to vote intelligently and to value their franchise.
Under the auspices of the Foreign Missions society of Wesley Chapel M.E. church in Los Angeles, delegations from 150 churches attended the annual interracial dinner at the home of Mrs. Tracey Greer, 1121 E. 22d St., last week. Mrs. Nancy Warner, former missionary to Africa from the Wesley Chapel congregation, was present. Rev. and Mrs. Jordan acted as host and hostess.
James Herman Banning of Ames, Iowa, aviator, performed a series of airplane maneuvers at Riverside-Arlington airport on July 3 and 4, where the leading Race citizens of the state were gathered in a pre-presidential campaign conference. A 2,000-piece band enmasse and 250 voice chorus, organized to function at the Olympic games in Los Angeles from July 30 to Aug. 14, were heard for the first time in public in a national broadcast over radio station KECA Thursday evening in Riverside, Calif. Harold W. Roberts is organizer. William May Garland is president of the Olympic Games association, and Zack J. Farmer is the secretary--manager. Governor James Rolph of California and Mary Pickford and Douglass Fairbanks, movie picture celebrities, were among those present who made speeches. The Hollywood Bowl orchestra rendered the closing music numbers.
Miss Maybell Craig, president of the local junior branch of the N.A.A.C.P., and a sophomore at the University of Northern California in Berkeley, Calif., was a delegate representing the university Y.W.C.A. at the recent California conference at Asilomar, Calif., summer camp.
The California jurisdiction of Masons will hold its annual grand lodge sessions in Vasa temple in Berkeley, Calif., beginning July 17 and closing July 29. The first night’s session will be in First Baptist church, Dana and Haste Sts. In the evening the Past Patrons and Past Matrons council. Order of Eastern Star, will hold a reception in the auditorium of Vasa temple in Berkeley, Calif. Theodore Moss of San Jose, Calif. Is the presiding state grand master. Mrs. Emily P. Norman of Berkeley is chairman of housing; Mrs Julia Davis of Oakland, chairman of program; H.H. Godfrey of Oakland, chairman of publicity, and T.W. Swinney is general chairman. Mrs. Alene Houston of Los Angeles is the state of grand matron."
