Description

"July is here it started with a BANG! courtesy of fireworks, and ecstatic that school is out young’uns.
Watermelon, picnics, popsicles, and picnics seem to be the order of the day around these parts. And Bar-B-Que’, you can smell it for miles around. Looks like everyone is playing-up the “fun in your own backyard.” EVERYONE seems to be doing the “chef bit.”
July also seems to be the month of travel. There is something about a lazy sunny day that just naturally makes everyone want to jump into their cars and take to the open road--how does that song go-”Summertime and the living is easy…”
Mr. and Mrs. George Artis and Mrs. Lula Jefferies, together with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wilson spent their “Fourth” in Washington D.C. They were the houseguests’ of Mr. and Mrs. William Ceicey.
Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Woodall of Cleveland Ohio stopped in Chicago and South Bend, Ind., enroute to Cairo, III, where they visited the Edgar Woodalls of Flint, Mich.
While we are on the subject of travel I must mention the “rush” trip of Mrs. Daisy A. Darien pack her bags in a hurry hoping she would arrive here before Sir Stork paid a visit at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hosie Rushing, Myrtle st. Luck was with her, the long-legged bird was nowhere in sight...when she arrived.
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Shields also had houseguests over the 4th of July weekend. Mrs. Shield, a former model from Wisconsin entertained her brother Amos Simons, and Miss Effie Stamper, of Milwaukee. Mrs. Shields is working on a new project which should interest the local gentry… she plans to open and operate a school of modeling come fall.
Marie and Eddie Turner will leave for New York CIty where they are scheduled to appear on “The Big Payoff”-- this will certainly bear watching… Julie Williams and Ivy Fisk will spent two glorious weeks in sunny Jamaica… lucky lucky girls.
PARTYFARE
The Popular Flint Social club, The Dusant Flintites closed shop the other evening with a lawn party at the lovely home of Warren and Chrystal Watson, Katie Vaughn, Mildred Jones, Annie Franks, Vivian Artis, Madelyn Watson, and Edna Shelton--The Duzant Flintites--were on hand to see that everyone had a good time. Charles Hughes, who won a handy Bar-B-Q grill, Milton Watson, who won a bushel basket of groceries, and Miss Julia Long, who won the first prize, an automatic deep fat fryer were especially happy at this beautiful lawn party… they were awarded these prizes because they held the lucky raffle tickets.
Hot fried chicken with all the trimmings also made the event an enjoyable one. This affair parked the end of the club’s affairs until after labor day. Happy vacation girls.
The “fanciest party of the month” was given by the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity the other evening at Detroit in the swank Latin Quarter. The occasion, their annual Black and White Ball.
Mr. and Mrs. Berlin Dobson, Lapeer St., were the houseguests’ of Detroiters Louis and Fran Simmons, jr., who hosted a “before” cocktail party-- sixteen party goers jammed their Monterey st., residence, and an “after” dinner party which included 12 Flintites among the happy gathering.
Also at the ball were, Mr. and Mrs. John Johnson, Chelan st., Mrs. Jackie White, Eight st., Mr. C. B. Molley, Kenilworth st., and many, many more.
July is also the month of birthdays… Happy Birthday to you Celene Pate, who can now boast that she is now over “12.” And a very happy birthday of her life. She is keeping real “cool” without the benefit of frosty drinks and air-conditioning. Janet is on location with her husband Tony Curtis who is filming “The Vikings” in the land of the ice and snow… how is that for realism… or should I say “reelism.”
Speaking of July and Independence Day, it brings to mind the change that has been made in the Holly-woods. The stars that shine in the Hollywood heavens have proclaimed their “independence” via their independent production companies. The Big Studios no longer rule the roost. THis is the day of independents-- picture companies that is… Columbia, MGM Paramount are making way for new companies headed (and run) by big name stars.
If you’ll check the “credits” on forthcoming pictures you will see new company names. One of the first of these was the company formed by John Wayne… he calls his company BATJAC… Hecht-Hill-Lancaster is headed by Burt Lancaster. Then there is EARLMAR--formed by Jeff Chandler and Meyer Mishkin and Hall Bertlett. LANTURN is headed by--you guessed it Lana Turner. Curt Leigh is the name of the company formed by … Right! … J. Leigh and T. Curtis… THAT figures.
And it goes without saying that Marilyn Monroe Productions is headed by Marilyn Monroe.
And now we turn to television-- as everyone does eventually, even the big name holdouts--DESILU Productions is controlled by a beautiful redhead and a dark haired, bongo-playing Cuban--somehow, his name escapes me at the moment. There is LEWISLOR, headed by Loretta Young and her Husband Howard Adams…
And last but not least is the new company formed by Ida pardon me Howard Duff… Their company is named after their little daughter BRIDGIT...cut idea. The other evening I spotted this on a theatre marquee showing today “Written on the Wind” and “Between Heaven and Hell” Who said there is nothing “new under the sun.”"
