Description

" JACKSON, Miss.-- “I don’t see any end in sight for the Freedom Riders’ coming to this city as long as interstate travelers must bow to racial segregation at bus terminals and railroad stations.”
This was what Richard Haley, a field representative for the Congress of Racial Equality, told AFRO this week when questioned as to how dong the Freedom Rid [sic] caravan would continue.
Word also reached here, this week, from Chicago that a “flood of Freedom Riders” will come here on July 4.
The demonstration is being mapped by Dr. Walker Bergman, retired professor who is working with the Congress of Racial Equality in Chicago and Detroit.
“There can be no cooling off period for human justice,” Dr. Berman said.
He said the target date for capitulation by Southern states is July 4.
Haley said he had information that riders were scheduled this week from New Orleans, Richmond, Va., Atlanta and a number of cities.
As of the weekend, 72 colored and white riders had been arrested at bus terminals and railroad stations.
The last two bus loads for the week came here Friday, bringing a total of 12.
A 13th Rider, Ralph Sertig, 31, of Chicago, was arrested when the bus stopped in Selma, Ala.
He was charged with assault and disturbing the peace. Bail was set at $1,500, with a trial scheduled for July 6.
The charges stemmed from the complaint of a white woman, reportedly from California, that Sterig sat on her leg.
Of the 72 arrested, 15 have been released on appeal bond of $500 each. The others remain in jail.
The last five to be released were the Revs. Jerome Copland and James Lawson, jr., both of Nashville; Grady Thomas, Alexander Anderson and the Rev. C.T. Vivian, also of Nashville."
