"Chicago Ill. July 22. - There is no such thing as an Independence Day celebration South of the Mason and Dixon line, according to J.C. Holmes, white, writing in a local paper. The people of that section show their enthusiasm by burning firecrackers on Christmas Day, and even Washington D.C. this year had no Fourth of July festivities.
From the Northern point of view, the whole South is standing on its head.
“Can anyone,” asked Mr. Holmes “tell me why school officers in the south prohibit the use of school buildings for lectures when the subject is Harriet Beecher Stowe or why the New Orleans Picayune tells its leaders that their model of character as taught to their children is Jefferson Davis and not Abraham Lincoln, and white Southern school histories teach that in all things relating to the Civil War the South was always right and the North everlastingly wrong?”
Perhaps someone can tell me by whate code of honesty Georgia manages to get twelve congressmen on a total vote of 59,196, or Louisiana eight on a total of 44,794 votes, while it takes 121,836 votes for Maine to get four congressmen and Iowa 340,311 votes to get eleven congressmen. Perhaps he can tell what glory there is in the fact that out of the 175 congressmen of the Democratic party 113 come from the section which steals its members in that way, while sixty-two come from all the rest of the country, and tha tout [sic] of that sixty two there are eighteen from the plug ugly districts of New York City.
Perhaps someone can tell me just why any man living outside of that “beloved South” eles [sic] than fourteen kinds of fool seven days a week if he votes with that kind of crowd."
