Police Safety Plans For July 4th Holiday p. 8

Subject

"During the three-day fourth of July holiday, all Chicago police patrol and traffic units will be fully manned for maximum patrol effort, Acting Superintendent James B. Conlisk reported. Of Prime Importance, Conlisk said, will be the concentration of moving violations on streets known to have a high accident rate as well as reckless and drunk drivers. Conlisk pointed out that in-asmuch [sic] as July 4th falls on a Monday this year, the holiday will add to the Friday evening traffic problem. He explained: “In large cities such as Chicago, there are more people with free time on the eve of a holiday and therefore, there are more automobiles moving around, in and out, of the city, he explained. Each individual who drives over the fourth of July holiday will influence how many will die or be injured - perhaps permanently maimed for the rest of his life… so on this holiday, use common sense, caution and courtesy,” he said. In addition to the regular district patrol and traffic assignments, special patrol tasks will be carried out by the Task Force Marine, Canine and Tactical units who will be assigned to patrol the lakefront parks and other public areas where hundreds of citizens and where hundreds of citizens and their families are expected to gather. Foot and squad patrol units of the Youth Division will also be assigned to special patrol duties in parks, beaches and other recreational areas to give special attention to children."
