"The celebration of the Fourth of July with an early morning joy ride at 2 a. m. Wednesday
resulted disastrously for a party of four consisting of one man and three women when the auto in
which they were riding crashed into a street car. One of the members of the party was killed and
the other three seriously injured.
Mrs. Inez Garner, 32, 2027, Prairie Ave., was killed and the injured are Sam Lester, 35, 2219,
Park Ave., owner of a soft drink parlor on the West side, driver of the car. He suffered a skull
fracture. Miss Clara Lewis, 28, 4425 Prairie Ave., a cabaret entertainer, sustained rib fractures
and miss Floretta Harding, 28, 2222, Park Ave., a waitress, suffered lacerations of the body and
internal injuries.
The auto was speeding east on Park Ave, and almost ran into a southbound Paulina St. Car.
Laster, who was driving the auto, tried to avoid hitting the car. His efforts caused the car to skid
and it crashed into the side of the street car.
Mrs. Garner, who was a musician, was taken to the county hospital with a fractured skull. She
died there an hour and a half after the accident. Mrs. Nanni Wilson, 76, 4008, Wahash Ave., was
struck Monday afternoon and fatally injured by a truck driven by Reta Buckner 16 West 47 th
street., under the elevated at 40 th St and Michigan Ave. Mrs. Wilson died a few hours later at the
Provident hospital. The driver of the truck was placed under arrest by the third district police. He
was exonerated from blame at the inquest held at 3550 Cottage Grove Ave."
