Description

“PITTSBURGH, Pa – Interest in the July 4th games between the Pittsburgh Homstead [sic] Grays and Pittsburgh Crawfords is growing leaps and bound. Fans of both races have been watching the performances of the two clubs which represent Pittsburgh in the Negro National League since the opening gun was fired on May 12th. Inquiries by mail and phone pour into offices of both clubs each week-end, and demands have already been made for reserved seats.
Loyal followers of the Grays feel that the Crawfords have no right to the spotlight position which the Greenles men now occupy. They simply cannot bring themselves to believe that a team which has been organized only three years should compare or compete with the most representative product of Negros in Pittsburgh for the past 12 years Chicago, Cleveland and all others concede that there must be some good reason for the weeklies and dallies [sic] to devote columns of space to this new child in the baseball family—but even so, they refuse to forsake the old friends for the new.
On the other hand, Craw converts say that competition stimulates interest. They know something right in their own town foe making comparisons – and they have been busy doing that. Granting that Cum Posey is one of the best organizers in the game, best alert manager. Granting all this, informed in the technique, a shrewd, and more, they point back to the color and systematic advertising of the Greenlee clan, as something which the public wants and is willing to pay for.
Opinions are not confined to these points. The baseball addict digs up his records and argues the performances against Philadelphia Stars, clubs which the Grys [sic] and Crawfords have nict [sic] this year. And out of it all comes a determination to overflow Greenlee Field on July 4 th [sic].”
