Monmouth, Ill. July 19. A large number of Monmouth people journey to Galesburg to spend the
Fourth of July at the beautiful Lake Story Beach and attend the dance given by the Sam Skinner
Post and Auxiliary No. 681 of the American Legion. Mr. And Mrs. J. T. Foster of Chicago
visited here the Fourth with her mother, Mrs. Ella Tinnel. Mrs. Hazel Farley of Chicago is
visiting friends here. The Colored Athletic Club of Monmouth played against two Galesburg
teams the Fourth, at Galesburg, losing the first and winning the second. J. T. Peoples Jr. visited
his parents here last week. He has been coaching at Piney Woods, Miss., and is now managing
the orchestra of that school. On Monday a number of his local friends gathered at his home and
were entertained by the 13-piece orchestra, which was greatly enjoyed by all. Mrs. Harriette
Payton, son and daughter, Lawrence Jr., and Marliss, returned Monday from Detroit, Mich.,
where she had been visiting her sisters. The Calvery Baptist Sunday school gave an ice cream
social Friday at the church. Mr. And Mrs. Leland Brooks are the proud parents of a son, born
Monday. Miss Lois Lyles of Rock Island visited Miss Susie Wallace last week. Henry Wallace
passed away Saturday at his home. Surviving him are his brother, Thomas J. Wallace of this city
and a number of other relatives. Funeral services were held Monday from Furnbull funeral home,
with Rev. C. M. Webster, pastor of Calvery Baptist church in charge."
