Who Will The Democrats Nominate?, p. 2

Description

“Who Will The Democrats Nominate? - This is the most exciting political question of the day. The Democratic Convention, which is to assemble in New York on the 4th of July will not be a unit; there will not be a great unanimity of sentiment. There will be so many candidates before that body - so many conflicting opinions as to availability - that the question will be, not only who they will nominate, but how they will nominate.
It the majority rule prevails, they will nominate Pendleton on the first ballot; he will undoubtedly have a plurality in the convention, and his adherents will not trust to the chances of a second ballot, but will force, or beg, or buy a sufficient number of the uncertain to make up a majority. If the two-thirds rule succeeds some other candidate will get the nomination.
Who will he be? The Democratic party have several candidates now befare them - Hancock, Seymour, Johnson, Chase, and last, though by no means least, our alliterate Governor of California, Henry H. Haight…
In the category of new men, Henry II. Haight, Governor of California, stand prominent. He is by no means so insignificant, a candidate as many imagine. Although until recently unknown, he has, as Governor of this State, shown considerable executive ability. He is reputed to be a finished scholar, an able lawyer, and perfect gentleman. He has shown himself far more liberal than could be expected, in view of his political associations.- He presided at the Chinese festival - acknowledged the envoys from the Celestial empire as men and brethren, and admitted them to “social equality;” he appointed a red-hot Black Republican (Mayor Coon) as one of the Tide Land Commissioners, notwithstanding the bowls of the Satanic press, and their demands to disappoint him; and he has so far won the respect, if not the esteem, of many of his political opponents. By nominating him, the Democracy might secure California, but he has not force of character sufficient to break up the invincible Grant phalanx.”
