Surprise! GA. County May Return to Union July 4, p. 3

Description

"TRENTON, Ga.-There may be more for the United States to celebrate on July 4 than its independence-Dade County, Georgia, which seceded from the Union July 4, 1860, will decide whether it wants to return or not.
The U.S. flag has not waved legally in Dade County breeze since that Independence Day in ’60 when a character known as “Uncle Bob” Tatum announced in the Georgia legislature that if the state didn’t secede from the Union, Dade County would - and it finally did.
“Uncle Bob’s” history-making speech went something like this: “By the gods, gentlemen, if Georgia does not vote to secede immediately from the Union, Dade county will secede from the state and become the independent state of Dade.
The county sent a proclamation to the federal government announcing that it was withdrawing from the Union. Since then, no one has seen fir to rescind that proclamation.
But on Independence day of this year, that status may be changed. Then, the citizens will cast an oral vote in Trenton town square to determine whether Dade shall remain an “independent state” or become just another of Georgia’s 159 counties.
In the event that citizens vote favorably for returning to the Union, then the good old Confederate flag that flies above the square will come down from the official pole it has decorated for 85 years. Ah, Progress!"
